Education: on the path to unity

Article Abstract:

The Interprovincial Education Committee is responsible for the coordination of pre-certification education for chartered accountants amongthe thirteen provincial institutes of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA). A national education plan should be adopted by the committee that could rectify education program inconsistencies resulting from differing course contents. Various proposals have been presented arguing that anational education plan can help defray costs, improve public perception and allow accountants the ability to adapt to the changing environment.

Light, liberty and learning

Article Abstract:

Accounting education is evaluated in the context of its emerging concentration on students' achievement of certification, at the expense of their exposure to the liberal arts, sciences and the humanities. It is argued, on the other hand, that an interdisciplinary approach to accounting education places undue burden on students in pursuing accounting. Instruction which integrates the social sciences with accounting content and procedures is recommended.

The road less traveled

Article Abstract:

Non-business degree holders reveal the experiences they underwent to obtain a chartered accountant (CA) designation. Special accounting programs link nontraditional CA students together and allow them to attend to full-time jobs by offering most courses during summer. Aside from handling numbers, CA students are trained to deal with people. Although the period of study is lengthened, CAs are assured of employment upon designation.
