Effects of alcohol and caffeine on maritime navigational skills

Article Abstract:

An experiment was undertaken to determine the effects of alcohol, caffeine and an alcohol/caffeine combination on performance during visual search, search and location of items on a navigational chart and the solving of maritime navigational problems. Experienced navigators took part and alcohol was found to impair performance on visual search and navigational problem-solving. Caffeine improved performance on visual search, although not on the chartsearch, nor did it improve the accuracy of navigational problem-solving.

Underwater visibility and the recall of subsea marker panels

Article Abstract:

Fifteen male professional divers were subjected to two underwater tests in London in an experiment to establish the accuracy of recall of marker panel figures and correlations between shapes and figures. Tests were conducted in the open sea and a diving tank. Results showed that memory recall differences were not significant but the ability of a diver to extract target data from a variety of information was the most important skill.
