Efficiency and technical progress in banking: empirical results for a panel of German cooperative banks

Article Abstract:

An analysis of data from 757 German cooperative banks from 1989-1992 was conducted to develop a multi-product translog cost function for the German banking industry. The analysis identified moderate economies of scale and scope for all the cooperative banks. Results showed that the average banks in all size classes deviated significantly from the best practice cost boundaries. However, the average banks exhibited growth factor productivities that are higher than smaller banks.
