Electricity

Article Abstract:

Competition has been introduced into the UK electricity industry and regulations have been imposed where there are natural monopolies. Nuclear electricity has been less easy to privatize and Scottish Nuclear and Nuclear Electric will be floated in 1996, separate from the initial privatization program. Bids for UK electric utilities have not been referred to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission but there have not been clearances for some bids either.

Electricity 'free-market-for-all' in crisis

Article Abstract:

UK households should be able to select electricity suppliers from April 1998 but some analysts see this deadline as difficult to achieve. No trials have been scheduled and no common computer systems have been developed. Individual companies are to develop their own systems. The electric utilities have invested in gas fired power stations and there is excess capacity which is likely to increase. It is not clear whether customers will see lower prices.
