Employers face 100 million pounds sterling pensions bill

Pension rights of part-time employees in the UK have been affected by a judgement at the European Court of Justice in 1994. Not allowing part-time employees to join such schemes could involve indirect discrimination since women are more likely to work part-time. This could cost employers some 100 million pounds sterling and will be a particular problem for employers in the public sector. Finance and retail industries are also likely to be affected due to the high proportion of part-time employees in these sectors.
