End of year report: must do better

Article Abstract:

Stock tips for 1997 recommended by Investors' Chronicle did not all perform well. The selection for 1996 performed better than the market as a whole, but no stocks recommended for 1997 were in the sectors that performed well in that year, financials, pharmaceuticals, and gas distribution. Larger companies tended to perform better than smaller companies in 1997, and the tips included many smaller companies which ine would expect to perform well due to the strong United Kingdom economy and pound sterling. Three tips which did perform well were Iceland, Telspec and Air London.

Relative merits

Article Abstract:

BZW sees United Kingdom stocks as becoming more attractive in relation to foreign stocks. There is less concern about UK interest rate rises, and rates may be raised in the US and Germany prior to UK rates being raised. UK stock valuations are also reasonable compared with those abroad. UK government borrowing is dropping and companies are purchasing their own stocks. There is also support from fund managers' cash balances. There is some concern that UK markets could be affected by developments abroad and by high wage rises in 1998.

But maybe the occasional snack

Article Abstract:

Stock selection is hard work, and involves spending long periods reading informationabout companies. The aim is to find companies that have more potential than is reflected in their stock prices. Investors should only buy stocks if they expect large price rises, since small gains or not worth the effort of investing. Profit forecasts and other numbers are not enough for an investment decision, and other factors such as director stockholdings are needed to make a decision.
