Engineering plants with increased levels of the antioxidant chlorogenic acid

Article Abstract:

Phenolics are the most widespread dietary antioxidants and among these chlorogenic acid (CGA) accumulates to high levels in some crop plants such as tomatoes. The findings indicate that over expression of HQT in tomato caused plants to accumulate higher levels of CGA, with no side effects on the levels of other soluble phenolics and to show improved antioxidant capacity and resistance to infection by a bacterial pathogen.

Improving lycopene production in Escherichia coli by engineering metabolic control

Article Abstract:

Altering the Ntr regulon global regulatory system of Escherichia coli can control the expression of two enzymes in lycopene synthesis resulting in increased production of lycopenes, a good antioxidant, while at the same time reducing metabolic imbalance.
