Exchange rates and agribusiness trade: a case study of Nebraska beef exports to Japan

Article Abstract:

A case study of a Nebraska beef exporter's exposure to exchange rate risk and how the exporter managed that risk is examined to show the effects of a floating exchange rate system on agribusiness exports to Japan. The beef exporter reduced its exchange rate risk via vertical integration. This was further helped by fortuitous changes in trade and exchange rate policy. The beef exporter has shifted its attention to improving the quality of its products and adding value to its product mix to satisfy discriminating Japanese customers.

Laws governing the use of technical standards as barriers to trade: the case of trade in livestock products

Article Abstract:

A review of the history and present state of international law covering the use of technical standards to international trade is presented. Trade in livestock products is used to demonstrate the kinds of conflicts that can crop up in the application and regulation of technical standards. Several changes in the GATT technical standards agreement are proposed. A case study of the hardships undergone by a US company in exporting high-quality beef to Europe is also provided.

The impact of environmental regulations on world grain trade

Article Abstract:

The current levels of domestic environmental regulations do not affect grain trade patterns much, according to an analysis using Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek (HOV) equations. Inclusion of proxies for environmental regulations in the HOV equations shows that they have little impact on the comparative advantage in grains. Trade patterns were attributable mainly to national factor endowments including capital, labor, land and energy.
