Extending the EC's role in space

Article Abstract:

A report on a proposed space policy for the EC was presented to the European Parliament by the European Commission. The report, entitled The European Commission: Crossroads in Space, outlined suggestions on how the EC can benefit from its participation in space exploration. The report considered particular sectors such as Earth observation, telecommunications and the industrial, commercial and defense industry sectors. The report concludes that the areas in which the EC can most benefit are the development of Earth observation systems and recoverable launch systems.

An international look at global navigation satellite systems

Article Abstract:

The Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) Working Group met for three-and-a-half days in Banff, Canada, to determine the roles of international cooperation and private sector cooperation in global navigation satellite systems. The GNSS Working Group's findings include the realization that uses of the Global Positioning System (GPS) will continue to increase worldwide as long as there are no charges for using the civil signal, and that the 1996 GPS Policy indicates substantial progress toward attaining official international acceptance of GPS.

The changing face of the European space sector: the policies of Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom

Article Abstract:

Significant changes are currently taking place in the European space sector. Cooperation between France and Germany in this area is becoming less significant, while the UK is showing signs of adopting a more open attitude towards Europe. Italy is re-evaluating its approaches to space policy, and is determined not to lose its third place in the European space hierarchy. German space policy will be influenced by a determination to adapt state structures to new requirements.
