FKI

Article Abstract:

FKI is a UK engineering firm and the sector has been affected by the high value of pound sterling which has hit exports and stock prices. FKI has not been greatly affected by currency changes. The company was a conglomerate in the 1980s and became more tightly focused in the 1990s. The Hardware and Materials Handling divisions have strong positions in the market, which the Automotive division faces pressure from automobile producers. The Engineering division is performing well and is the biggest independent supplier world wide of electrical machines.

FKI has been affected by the strength of pound sterling, as have most United Kingdom engineering firms. FKI underperformed in 1996 to 1997, but has improved its performance in 1997, according to interim results for 1997 to 1998. The company announced in Nov 1997 that it was selling its auto parts business, and FKI aims to focus on materials handling, electrical products and hardware. The company could achieve earnings growth averaging 16% for the three years from 1998, according to BZW.

Article Abstract:

FKI is a UK engineering firm which is performing well in the US, which accounts for 80% of the goup's operating profit. FKI has acquired Amdura, a US producer of materials handling machinery, which is contributing to profits. New housing starts have dropped which has affected the group's windows and doors division. Production of hardware is being moved to Malaysia from Germany in order to reduce costs. A profit of 85 million pounds sterling is forecast for 1995 by Panmure Gordon.
