Farmers: tighten your belts and fight the squeeze

Article Abstract:

Past incentives for farmers in the European Economic Community (EEC) countries to produce larger amounts of food crops have resulted in surpluses, necessitating the imposition of price reductions and production quotas on some farming commodities. Farmers in EEC nations also face higher land rents, increasing taxes, reduced governmental funding, higher labor costs and inflationary pressures. Proper farm budgeting can help reduce the impact of these adverse economic conditions. Guidelines for instituting stricter financial controls over farming production, implementing farm budgets, and planning for tax and other capital expenditures are detailed. The use of computers by farmers to manage crops and livestock is also discussed.

1992: look before you leap

Article Abstract:

Companies that are thinking of entering new markets after the unification of the European common market in 1992 should research potential benefits and market prospects in detail. According to the European Commission, the gains obtained from streamlining frontier formalities and compliance standards will amount to between two- and three-percent of total output, while market integration results derived from scale effects and competition effects will amount to as much as four- to six-percent of output. These figures will vary widely from company to company and between industries, as will the actual timetables to unification and the convergence of prices.
