Fast tracking: Thanks to the bar code, with the blink of an eye, every product on the supermarket shelf has transformed into a microdatabase

Article Abstract:

The bar code is one of the most recognized icons in the world and is used in a wide range of applications. The bar code was an elusive dream of American business for decades, and Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver, students at Philadelphia's Drexel Institute of Technology, embarked ona quest in 1948, that would result in the modern bar code. The bar code is used in retailers' loyalty programs to track customer purchases and offer discounts, and this has caused concern among consumers.

Article Abstract:

Saran Wrap was first released in 1954 by the Dow Chemical Company. Its predecessor was cellophane, a chemical relative of rayon, which was an almost invisible layer that reinforced the 'natural' nature of what was enclosed. The addition of low molecular weight polymers to Saran gave it adhesive properties, and its legendary 'cling'.
