First Financial Holdings Inc

The net interest earnings of First Financial Holdings Inc (FFCH), First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Charleston's holding company, increased by 13.7% while its gross interest margin went up from 2.80% to 3.10% in the 1st qtr ending Dec 1991. FFCH's top executives went on a stock-buying tear from Dec 1991 until the early part of Jan 1992. Chief Financial Officer Thomas A. Hood bought the most number of shares. FFCH's deposits and assets are expected to increase further with the impending acquisition of Peoples Federal Savings and Loan Assn.

Westcorp Inc

Article Abstract:

Westcorp Inc's share earnings were lessened because its chief operating subsidiary Western Financial Services Bank was forced to provide approximately $8 million to its Sep 1992 quarter general valuation allowance. Westcorp also had to write off $9.2 million on a Western Financial joint operation portfolio valuation. The financial services firm's 3rd qtr 1992 loan loss provision increased from $9.3 million to $15.4 million. Westcorp, however, is optimistic about its consumer finance loans and small housing business.

MNC Financial, Inc

Article Abstract:

MNC Financial Inc reported a reduction in high level problem assets of 14% in Jun 1992. However, the company's foreclosed assets and non-performing loans were reported to have accumulated to $1.39 billion. In light of this, Moody's Investors Service and Standard & Poor's both hightened their debt ratings outlook for MNC. MNC gives no dividends for the company's common shares reaching 89 million.
