Flea collars and peat held back profits

Article Abstract:

William Sinclair was affected by approval being withdrawn for a cat flea collar in 1998, as well as a poor harvest of peat in that year which meant that peat had to be bought in, which in turn affected margins. The company's peat harvest has increased in 1999. The market for pet products has an 8% annual growth rate, and this should benefit William Sinclair as it recovers from loss of market share. The company is also expanding into gardening products such as lawn care, which will initially affect profits due to spending on marketing, though a recovery is then expected.

Amberley

Article Abstract:

Amberley should benefit from a revival in the fortunes of smaller companies' stocks. The company could be affected by business cycles since it is involved in a cyclical industry, chemicals, but Amberley performed better than most in the sector in 1998. Five acquisitions have been made by Amberley since 1992 in its core area of producing and distributing chemicals and specialty minerals. The company's three key businesses are Bousfield, Lawrence Industries, and Metacol.
