Follow the leader? Adoption behavior in food retailers' decision to offer fresh irradiated ground beef

Article Abstract:

The use of ionizing radiation to reduce pathogens and thus help extend the shelf life of red meat products in the US was authorized in February 2000 and several US supermarkets commenced the sale of fresh irradiated ground beef under their own labels. The factors that influenced the supermarkets to sell such beef are examined and among other reasons the fact of a competitor doing so as well as his proximity increased the likelihood of a store's adoption of irradiated ground beef.
