Quids in for kids

Article Abstract:

UK friendly societies offer investments for children allowing small sums to be saved with tax benefits. The policies have to last for 10 years to qualify for the tax advantages. Investments for children tend to be long term so other products with higher risk levels may be preferred. These include investment trusts and unit trusts. Friendly societies have been allowed to increase the range of products on offer following changes in UK Law. Investors who do not hold friendly society products over 10 years may suffer heavy penalties for cashing in early.

Friendly, tax-free and exceedingly expensive

Article Abstract:

Investment plans from United Kingdom friendly societies may involve such high charges that capital erosion occurs, especially if investment performance is poor. There are tax advantages to friendly society plans, but fixed charges may be imposed, and front loading of costs means that initial charges can be as much as 65% for the first year. This is the case with Royal Liver's Taxmaster plan. The value of policies that are surrendered early also tends to be very low.
