General Electric Company is focusing on industrial and defense electronics and telecoms with a new management team headed by George Simpson. The company was built up through acquisitions and set up a number of JVs in Europe. The company's financial performance was not outstanding from around 1985, and changes in 1997 and 1998 have led to it becoming more highly focused. GEC ranks sixth in the US market for defense electronics following the acquisition of Tracor. The company could carry out further moves and might even seek a tie-up involving Northrup.

Bowthorpe is becoming a supplier of telecoms equipment, and has seen its stock price rise. The company should see a further stock price rise, and should benefit from profit growth potential offered by its network management division. The acquisition of Netcom has helped to bring about this transformation, though it has also meant a rise in the company's borrowings. The company's stock appears to have a low rating compared with Marconi and other suppliers of telecoms equipment.
