Security concerns retard acceptance of EDI

Article Abstract:

Technological problems in the encryption and authentication procedures for security hamper the acceptance of electronic data interchange (EDI). The authentication key at the beginning and end of messages should be changed several times annually. An authentication standard to verify the accuracy of a message is nearing completion by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The encryption procedure ensures confidentiality by the substitution of a code for letters and numbers. This procedure, however, requires complex changes of software and hardware to satisfy the ANSI X9.23 encryption document. Corporate customers express limited interest in EDI because of the unsolved security problems.

Middle-market firms find Exim pilot fills trade finance gap

Article Abstract:

Trade finance for middle-market companies is the purpose of a pilot program established by the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Exim) in several cities and states. The pilot program with the city of Los Angeles' Economic Development Office is a well-developed, direct channel for Exim guarantees for $25,000 to $3 million without working through banks. Assistance is provided on completion of the extensive paperwork at or below cost. Corporations with Exim guarantees can obtain the funds from local and regional California banks that support the program.
