Gene prioritization through genomic data fusion

Article Abstract:

A bioinformatics approach, together with flexible software termed Endeavour, is described that prioritizes candidate genes underlying biological processes or diseases that are based on their similarity to known genes involved in these phenomena. The approach has identified a novel gene involved in craniofacial development from a 2-Mb chromosomal region, deleted in some patients with DiGeorge-like birth defects, and has offered an alternative integrative method for gene discovery.

Assessing computational tools for the discovery of transcription factor binding sites

Article Abstract:

Experts provide some guidance to users regarding the accuracy of available computational tools designed for the discovery of novel regulatory elements in various settings and a benchmark of data sets for assessing future tools is provided. The guidance is provided with reference to an assessment of thirteen different computational tools for de nova prediction of regulatory elements.

Discovery of regulatory elements in vertebrates through comparative genomics

Article Abstract:

Issues of reliability in studies in which comparative genomic approaches are applied to the discovery of regulatory elements at a genome-wide level in vertebrates are analyzed. Results provide a glimpse into the wealth of information that comparative genomics could yield and suggest the need for further improvement of genome-wide comparative computational techniques.
