Article Abstract:

There are 10 life insurers and building societies shedding their mutual status in 1997 and paying bonuses to members. There are still opportunities for speculators seeking to benefit from future bonuses, but they are more difficult to find. Insurers could become bid targets and some companies are seeking mutuals as acquisitions. Building societies could also become targets, though hostile takeovers tend not to occur. Speculators should ensure that the account they choose gives them membership of the building society.

Decline the standard when it comes to insurance

Article Abstract:

Specialist insurance policies can offer better deals for wealthy individuals than standard policies. Limits for single articles may be too low with standard policies, which may also impose difficult security conditions. Direct insurance tends not to be appropriate for wealthier individuals since standasized packages are offered and brokers can provide safeguards. There are divisions within this market, with insurance cover for fine art as one speciality.

Direct - and to the point?

Article Abstract:

UK direct insurance can offer better rates since middlemen are not used. Preferred Direct was the UK's first such insurer, starting to offer services from 1982, followed by Direct Line from the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1985. Insurers can cherry pick so offer cheaper insurance while retaining the same margin, benfiting from economies of scale. Brokers can also provide competitive rates and their products may offer more convenience to cleints.
