Getting out of an Aukett situation

Article Abstract:

Robert Warner became finance director of Aukett Assoc in 1992, the worst year in the UK-based integrated building design firm's history. Up before then, the company had seemed headed for tremendous growth. However, the company was derailed by the failure of a property development project, the large amount of its bad debt and sharp decline in its stock price. Its turnover for the year plummeted to just seven million pounds sterling from 15 million pounds in 1991. Aukett responded by implementing radical measures, including significantly reducing its workforce. The move did not prevent the firm from announcing its first pre-tax loss ever in Mar 1992, but it did place Aukett in a much better position than its competitors. It is the only remaining listed design firm in the UK and currently enjoys a healthy order book.

Good news and getting better

Article Abstract:

Historically, the UK printing unions had opposed the modernization of newspaper technology because modernizing would make many union jobs unnecessary. However, a variety of publications have achieved success by moving operations to modern printing plants which require greatly reduced staffing. Eddy Shah's paper, Today, pioneered the use of direct in-putting of text through computer technology. The reduction in costs generated by the innovations meant that a national newspaper targeting a smaller audience could thrive, as the examples of the the Independent, founded in 1986 and the Correspondent, founded in 1988, prove. Management of the two papers agree that targeting a newspaper to the potential market is vital for success.
