Gone with the wind

Article Abstract:

Wind energy in Great Britain is on the verge of becoming a viable commercial alternative to traditional energy sources. The wind energy industry has received a big boost from the government's demonopolization of the electric utilities sector. Under the sector's privatization program, Britain's regional distributors have been required to source a portion of their electricity from renewable energy sources, wind energy included. Commercial wind energy research has been ongoing in Great Britain since the early 1970s, but lack of governmental support has hindered its commercial application. The potential of wind energy is evident in the success of similar programs launched in Denmark and California, the acknowledged pioneers in wind energy.

The demise of Davy

Article Abstract:

Davy Corporation PLC was one of the UK's most successful engineering firms, with 12,000 employees and a turnover of 1.6 billion pounds sterling, until a gross miscalculation brought about its financial ruin. The engineering firm agreed to convert an oil rig for Midland & Scottish Resources, which turned out to be a job too big for Davy. The project fell way behind schedule, required manhours far greater than what was originally estimated, and, upon completion, will cost Davy almost 130 million pounds, a sum greater than the value of the contract. The bankrupt Davy Corporation was bought by Trafalgar House, a property, construction, engineering, and shipping conglomerate.
