Good infrastructure helps draw potential investors

Article Abstract:

The East Midlands, England, benefits from good links with the M1 motorway and other road links are being developed which reduce journey times. Road links with the East Midlands Airport are also good, and this attracts companies planning investment. There are rail links between Nottingham and London, with services each hour, but there is concern over privatization of the railroad. DHL is a distribution concern which has moved to East Midlands Airport, as has UPS, a parcels company.

Pit closures prove serious loss to buoyant economy

Article Abstract:

The East Midlands region, England, has been hit by the closure of coal mines in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The two counties offer flexible labor, and also have a strong small business sector. There has been an underlying recovery in the economies of the two counties if the impact of coal mine closures is excluded, according to Price Waterhouse in a survey of the region. The textile industry is a major employer, though it faces competition from Far Eastern firms.

Corporate finance set to pick up after slow 1994

Article Abstract:

Opportunities for corporate finance are likely to increase in the East Midlands region of England. Management buyouts increased in 1994 in value terms, according to Price Waterhouse, though not in terms of numbers of transactions finalised. The market for corporate finance saw a slowdown in 2nd half 1994, though this trend is expected to change in 1995. Two venture capital companies are located in the region and these are British Coal Enterprise and 3i.
