Good so far, but difficult decisions ahead

Article Abstract:

The Accounting Standards Board (ASB) and its Financial Reporting Review Panel have been performing very well since their establishment in the early 1990s. During its first five years of existence, the board has released a number of significant standards on a wide variety of concerns, including capital instruments, off balance sheet finance, reporting financial performance and business combinations. It is currently addressing issues such as goodwill and other intangibles, and deferred tax and pensions. Organizationally, the ASB has also improved tremendously from the days of the Accounting Standards Committee. Its membership has been streamlined, but its staff and resources have been increased. The board's remaining two full-time members have also been given more authority.

Trouble ahead

Article Abstract:

The US economy is slowing down, the Japanese are experiencing an economic crisis, and the major stock markets fell dramatically in early 2001, yet a major recession is unlikely. What is likely, however, is that the major economies will experience a difficult adjustment period before they can begin to recover.
