Holes in the accounts: a brief guide to investor protection

Article Abstract:

UK investors using stockbrokers are protected by monitoring and complaints schemes and by compensation schemes. The Securities and Futures Authority (SFA) regulates stockbrokers, and portfolio managers are regulated by the Investment Management Regulatory Organisation (IMRO). Brokers may also insure against employee theft, and have professional indemnity insurance. The SFA has a Complaints Bureau and a Consumer Arbitration Scheme, while the Investment Ombudsman deals with complaints relating to companies regulated by IMRO.
