Hong Kong watchers debate degradation

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong stock markets fell in Jul 1995 after a rise ealier in the year, and are affected by developments in mainland China. The value of Hong Kong real estate is not likely to recover rapidly since US interest rates no longer look set to fall. Exports are performing well, though consumer spending is weak. Capital spending should also help boost economic growth. There is concern over Chinese relations with the US, but optimists foresee a smooth transfer of power to China since it is in China's interests to maintain Hong Kong's prosperity,

Hong Kong: nagging worries

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong share prices have risen in 1995, but there is concern that this may not last. Consumer spending is sluggish and inventories are high. Gross domestic product (GDP) is forecast to grow by 5% in 1995 according to official forecasts, while BZW forecasts 3.5% for 1995 and 1996. A drop in interest rates and a relaxation of austerity measures in mainland China should help Hong Kong share prices, optimists argue, but pessimists are more concerned about the handover to China.

Hong Kong: the double warrant

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong stock market has revived in 1995 following its drop after US interest rates rose in 1994. A subsequent drop in US interest rates and a rise in the value of the US dollar has attracted funds to Hong Kong which has tied its currency to the US dollar. Relations with mainland China have improved, and corporate restructuring in Hong Kong has also proved attractive to investors. There is still concern over political events which worries more pessimistic analysts.
