Hotline to the future

Article Abstract:

The increasing sophistication of information technology may soon transform the common telephone into a personal communication center. Already the use of mobile telephones is on the rise. In the UK, cellular subscribers are expected to account for 20% of the population by the start of the 21st century. There is also the expected shift from the analogue network when digital portable and mobile cellular networks are introduced in the UK in 1993. Digital telecommunication has several advantages over analogue, including better sound quality, increased security and greater capacity. Telecommication was further ushered into a new era with the introduction of the integrated services digital network (ISDN). With this network, it may be possible for firms to extend client facilities and establish better communications with other companies even without private networks. In addition, ISDN can be used for videoconferencing.

The incredible shrinking PC

Article Abstract:

The personal computer continues to get smaller. The first portable computer introduced in the early 1980s was the size of a sewing machine, but advances in computer technology have made it possible to make the PC shrink into the size of a briefcase. Not content with the very portable laptops, computer manufacturers have gone on to shrink the PC even further, launching what are called 'palmtops.' Currently, the smallest PC available in the market is the Olivetti Quaderno, a 'notebook' computer comparable with a thick paperback in size and weight. The shrinking of the PC's size is accompanied by the reduction in prices and the enhancement of the machine's power and flexibility. However, despite these attractive qualities, portable computers have yet to realize their fullest potential since most corporate networks are still designed in a way that does not allow portables to be connected.
