How to insure yourself against the effects of the dreaded P45

Article Abstract:

There were 775,000 people made unemployed in the United Kingdom from summer 1997 to summer 1998, and insurance can help ease the impact of unemployment. There is little help from the government even with mortgage payments. State aid for mortgage payments is only avaiable after nine months to people with no partner in work and capital of less than 8,000 pounds sterling. Redundancy compensation is also often very low. Insurance sold with the mortgage may represent poor value due to high commissions, so consumers should shop around for more competitive prices.

Second hand advice: Traded endowments are still being heavily promoted by marketmakers but it is vital to understand the likely tax treatment of your maturing policy before making purchase

Article Abstract:

The secondary market in endowments is continuing to fall due to the diminishing supply available, but policies are still attractive to investors who can benefit from the terminal bonus. The proceeds of a policy have certain tax implications, with capital gains tax chargeable on maturity proceeds. Non qualifying policies are subject income tax liability and CGT.
