Hyundai's channel plan stymies PC sales

Article Abstract:

President and CEO of Hyundai Electronics America's Information Systems Division, Edward D. Thomas, resigned in mid-April 1993, following a fall in sales of a new family of over 40 microcomputers. President and chief executive officer of Bell Computer Systems, Van Nuys, CA, Chaz Haba, is running the division at the moment. It has been suggested by analysts that retaining the Hyundai brand name, usually associated with cheap cars, hindered the increase of the division's computer-market share. Thomas does not agree, attributing the lack of success to a distribution policy which allowed even top brands to be sold in the direct and retail distribution channels.

Printer sales soar after shaky start

Article Abstract:

Hewlett-Packard Co's (HP) inkjet printers achieved significant sales success after initially difficult marketing in the mid-1980s. HP currently dominates the world computer printer market with a 60% market share. The first LaserJet printer was introduced in 1985 at a cost of $3,500 and now its DeskJet 550C model, which is capable of making color prints, retails for $700. HP's success stems from its decision to refine the technology with new enhancements, including color, and properly defining its customer market.
