Implications of a changing commodity quality definition: the case of Canadian durum wheat exports to Italy

Article Abstract:

Canada has built a reputation as an exporter of high-quality durum wheat through its strict grading and licensing system which is complemented by a superior marketing system. However, this reputation for quality has been put in doubt by the drop in Canada's share of Italian wheat imports from 55% in 1980-82 to 15% in 1988-1990. A survey of Italian firms showed that Canada's grading system is perceived as ineffective in communicating quality requirements to farmers and breeders. This led many Italian importers to believe that the quality of Canadian durum wheat is not enough to justify its high price.

Competitiveness of the world durum wheat and durum milling industries under alternative trade policies

Article Abstract:

The effects of alternative trade policies on the competitiveness of the world durum wheat and milling industries are analyzed using a spatial equilibrium model. The US is found to benefit the most under a free trade system because of its competitive advantage while France suffers the most due to high production costs. The analysis also shows that the US milling industry is more competitive than the Canadian milling industry.

Acreage response under policy incompatibilities: the US durum wheat situation

Article Abstract:

Changes in acreage allotments for durum wheat in the US from 1970 to 1993 and in Canada from 1970 to 1992 have affected the supply of durum wheat in the export market. Estimation of acreage response models revealed, however, that the decline in US market share relative to Canada was not due to the entry of a third exporting nation, but to the incompatibility of its agricultural and commercial policies.
