In pursuit of excellence

Article Abstract:

A merger between Simpson Curtis and Pinsent and Co means that further mergers are likely involving law firms in Leeds, England. Simpson Curtis is a Leeds firm which has merged with a firm based in Birmingham, England. There are six major law firms in Leeds. Booth and Co, which ranks third among these firms, is also a possible merger candidate, according to local speculation, though the company denies that this is likely. Mergers between large regional law firms in the UK are seen as a way to improve their competitive position.

An awful lot of lawyers

Article Abstract:

Law firms in Leeds, England, face increased competition following a boom in the late 1980s and continued expansion in the 1990s. Leeds ranks second among legal services centers in England, after London. There is a debate as to whther expansion should be into national, international or simply regional markets, and whether contraction is likely to occur. The major six companies in Leeds are optimistic and argue that they offer expertise and lower prices than London law firms.

Coping with a buyer's market

Article Abstract:

The market for corporate legal services in Leeds, England, has seen rapid growth and increased competition which has led to lower prices. Smaller companies are especially affected, and some may be pushed out of business. No downsizing is likely among the larger law firms unless a merger is carried out. Clients have greater power to set prices, and select the most competitive bidder. Law firms have had to become more efficient and better managed.
