In the liability odyssey, it's land ahoy

Article Abstract:

The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) is optimistic about its 3-year-old request to amend the Canada Business Corporations Act and financial institutions legislation to acquire a modified proportionate liability. On Oct 23, 1997, the CICA had a 25-minute oral presentation of the bid for a modified proportionated liability before the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce. The committee will report to the government and if granted, the ruling will be passed within months.

Mergers: competition the issue

Article Abstract:

A study serves to explain the valuation aspect of concentration against competition. In it is explored a facet in competition where no single financial institution dominates the market, allaying fears that megabank alliances may result to dominance by big financial institutions of the market. For as long as there are policies that regulate entry of new and existing players in the market, Canadian financial services groups can always look forward to a fair and competitive playing field.

CAs "locked up" with media for Martin's fourth budget

Article Abstract:

Accountants played an important role in making the Canadian public understand the country's 1997-1998 budget. The CICA had four tax specialists explain the essentials of the budget to the media and this signifies the increasing social significance of accountants. The move by CICA helped raise civic consciousness on central planning and also resulted in positive media exposure of the organization.
