Article Abstract:

Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Pres. Allan McNab and Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) Pres. Keith Woodley are both convinced that a merger between the two will be extremely beneficial. Its advantages will include gaining international influence and preserving the distinction between the professional and the business aspects of the memberships. Many also believe the unification will inject new life into the accounting profession. The respective councils of CIMA and ICAEW monitor the developments in the merger negotiations, but the ultimate decision is left to members. The combination of the two organizations is not being forced on anyone. A two thirds majority of the CIMA and ICAEW membership will have to approve the plan before the merger becomes a reality.

Decision time at the ICAEW

Article Abstract:

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW) asked its members to vote on two landmark proposals that are distinct, but related under the banner of what the institute describes as quality assurance. The first scheme introduces a compulsory across-the-board system of ensuring that all members undertake regular continuing professional development (CPD) and the second is the introduction of Practice Assurance, a new system of practice review that would affect all member firms and members holding practicing certificates.
