Independent uses reinsurers heavily and is charged the market rate though risks are better than average. This could change as the company's record keeps improving.

The company has tended to perform better that insurers as a whole, and this is a result of its underwriting policies, according to chief executive, Michael Bright. Market conditions are difficult for insurers, but the company's profit margins are not being sacrificed for new business.
