Into BAT for standards

Article Abstract:

David Allvey serves as the finance director for BAT Industries and is a member of the Accounting Standards Board (ASB) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). He values his participation in these two organizations because it provides him the opportunity to represent the industry in matters surrounding accounting, particularly accounting standards. He comments that the input of industry to international accounting standards is important. While serving on ASB and ICAEW, Allvey is also involved in the demerger of the financial services business of BAT Industries and its merger with Zurich Insurance to create the new company Zurich Financial Services Group. The tobacco business will pursue a greater market in foreign markets. Allvey has decided to remain with the financial services group.

Convenient, cheap and safe?

Article Abstract:

The Internet has enormous potential as a marketing tool. It offers convenience, cost-effectiveness and access to more than 50 million people all over the world. However, many companies still hesitate to use this technology to conduct business because of security concerns. They fear that customer accounts, credit card details and other confidential information will not be safe from hackers and fraudsters. Nevertheless, it is believed that the highly favorable economics of the Internet will eventually compel businesses to embrace electronic commerce. Some also contend the Internet banking will grow rapidly with the widespread adoption of public-key cryptology. This technology involves the use of a complex mathematical number as a key.
