Article Abstract:

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has placed rental property owners under scrutiny as rental properties are regarded as a popular tax-effective instrument. The rental owners should be fully aware about the tax issues before making investment in renovation of their property or planning to sell it at profit since the tax authorities are very strict in respect of calculating overclaiming of expenses and correctly declaring capital gains on the sale of the property.

The ICAA's efforts to help members understand the complex tax consolidation regime are presented. The ICAA has tried to advocate with the Senate Economics Committee to simplify the legislation and has tried to work closely with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to design user-friendly fact sheets.

Service trusts and the ATO

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) stated that it would not scrutinize the service trust arrangements. This increased the interests of many members as service trusts and clients such as doctors, chemists, lawyers and engineers.
