Is your laparoscopy essential?

Article Abstract:

Laparoscopy is an operation that involves the insertion of an endoscope through a surgical incision. The first laparoscopic operations were used for the removal of kidney stones. However, this procedure is now rarely done except in cases where the kidney stones are too big to be demolished by external shockwave lithotrypsy. Nowadays, laparoscopic operations are usually reserved for the piecemeal removal of unwanted organs such as inflamed appendices and cyst-ridden ovaries by remote control. Although considered minimally invasive, laparoscopies do carry a measure of risk and it would be advisable for patients to carefully consider the technical difficulties involved. This difficulties include operating time that is often three times longer than standard operations done by incision, more prolonged anaesthetic exposure and the possibility that an open operation may be resorted to if laparoscopy fails.

Is medical progress bad for your health?

Article Abstract:

The analysis of data of babies born in Brazil in 1982, 1993 and 2004 showed no overall change in health of newborn babies and reduction in death rates despite access to advanced medical technologies. The medical progress is entirely offset by the growth of an unregulated private sector in which doctors driven by the profit motive encourage mothers to spend their rising disposable income on tests and operations that they do not need.
