It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings

Article Abstract:

The Japanese economy seems to have rebounded from its slump, when inflation reached 4.5% in Jan 1991, the highest rate recorded in Japan since Jun 1981. The high rate of inflation was caused by the oil price shock caused by the Persian Gulf War and by an increase in fresh food prices caused by abnormal weather. The end of the War and a return to seasonal weather caused prices to drop, thus deflating the economy. The appreciation of the yen against the US dollar has also exerted deflationary pressure. However, the Japanese economy likely will experience stagflation at the end of 1991 due to the economic dislocations caused by the problems in the real estate market and a tight labor market.

Serious money

Article Abstract:

The motivation behind Japanese finance are different compared to Western motivation. To the Japanese, financial markets are seen as a means of creating national wealth and of fostering and developing business. The Japanese eschew a short-term outlook emphasizing immediate returns for more long-term, stable strategies. A great proportion of equity is not bought or sold but is held in integrated cross-holdings directed to enhancing stability. Equity holdings are long-term and placements are done for the purpose of building partnerships between companies committed to growth and development.

Heisei-furusato-kokusaika

Article Abstract:

Japan is quietly undergoing a social revolution. Leisure and personal enjoyment are becoming more important in the Japanese society. The government is addressing these needs by building up the infrastructure for leisure and relaxing its traditional strict standards on long working hours. Internationalization will play a greater part because Japanese are becoming frequent tourists abroad, and Western business techniques in convenience and leisure industries are slowly making an impact on Japanese life.
