Japanese direct foreign investment in agricultural industries: a review of some recent developments

Article Abstract:

Japanese direct foreign investment in the agricultural sectors of foreign countries declined from 1.6% in 1980 to 0.3% in 1989. This may be attributed to Japan's lack of competitive advantage in those industries, imposition of quotas on imported agricultural products, and higher rates of return from investments in other industries. However, an increase in investment was noted in industries where import restrictions were reduced or eliminated. For instance, the removal of quotas on beef imports into Japan paved the way for increased investment in the beef industries of US and Australia.
