Buyers include Yamaichi which sees National Power as having financial strength. The seller is Greig Middleton which is concerned about a number of factors including a possible windfall tax.

The company is a major supplier of electricity in the UK, accounting for 32% of UK electricity in 1995, a figure set to drop to 25% by 2000. There is concern that the company is using its power in the wholesale electricity market to make generation from coal-fired power stations appear less attractive. The company is affected by downward pressure on prices to some extent, and has issued a profit warning for 1998 to 1999. The company is expanding overseas though this may not help its stock price.
