Article Abstract:

K-III Magazine Corp. has reportedly reached a tentative agreement to buy several US publications of Maclean Hunter Publishing Co. for $65 million. The acquisition includes 'Dog World,' 'Coal' and 'American Printer' journals as well as Minneapolis, MN-based Lakewood Publications Inc. It follows an unprecedented buying spree in the second half of 1994 which, according to observers, could serve as the prelude to its planned initial public offering in 1995. K-III's majority shareholder is Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts and Co.

This situation has pushed up prices and profits. In fact, financial corporations have become interested in purchasing publishing companies to cash in on the trend. Costs in postage and paper have, of course, risen but not to the extent of seriously affecting price and profit trends.
