Keen for a new start

Article Abstract:

Torday and Carlisle is an engineering company which appointed James Leek as its chairman in April 1998. The company aims to invest in quoted industrial companies that are undervalued. An invesment in a 9.9% stake in Meristem has been followed by a drop in Meristem's stock price. Meristem has issued a profit warning which has affected Torday and Carlisle's stock price, and this may provide a buying opportunity. Torday is also involved in marine negines where it has maintained volumes despite problems in the market, and metal spraying, which is performing well.

Ascot ready to step up a class

Article Abstract:

Ascot was a shell company with some real estate assets which acquired Suter, a small conglomerate, in Jul 1996, and which has become an engineering firm. The company's share price has dropped since the acquisition. Ascot aims to focus on three divisions, refrigeration, engineering, and another division which may be chemicals. Other subsidiaries are to be sold in addition to Ascot's original real estate assets. This would reduce debt, cut interest costs and boost profits. Asoct's pre-tax profit is forecast at 28 million pounds sterling for 1997 to 1998.

Semple's not-so-simple virtues

Article Abstract:

Semple Cochrane is a small, specialist engineering firm which has reported interim results for 1997 to 1998 that are better than expected. The company specialises in areas that are essential though not usually the largest expense of a project. One such area is ensuring that ships comply with safety standards. Price is less important than experience and credibility, and the company tends to be awarded 'cost plus' contracts which guarantee that it can make a profit.
