Article Abstract:

Hollywood was to successfully release a series of horror science fiction films depicting mutant insects in the 1950s. The postwar genre of horror films might be called 'Insect Noir' or 'Cinema Arthropoda' because bugs were to enjoy a golden age in cinema helped along by special effects considered sophisticated during that time. Such films were produced as a result of the prevailing paranoia in the US society during that period. The Japanese were to produce their own insect films in the 1960s.

Tippett Studios' has developed computer-generated images of vicious, 70mm alien insects which attack earth in the upcoming, fall 1997 movie 'Starship Troopers.' The bugs have eight legs though they were originally designed to have four, and are one of six insect species featured in the movie. They act as ambulating can openers which slice and dice their prey. Starship Troopers is one of numerous animated insect-inspired movies that Hollywood studios will release during the next few years.
