Kingfisher

Article Abstract:

Kingfisher failed to acquire ASDA after Wal-Mart made a higher offer, but there are other possible acquisitions in retailing which is becoming more international. The company has made some good acquisitions in mainland Europe, and ranks first in the European DIY market, and second in electricals. Kingfisher is seeking to penetrate the German market where it is making progress, though there is stiff competition. The company's value positioning should help in the British market.

Kingfisher

Article Abstract:

Kingfisher is a United Kingdom retail group which has improved its performance in the three years to 1998. Return on capital has risen, and cash-flow return is also good. The group includes B and Q with a dominant position in the UK DIY retail market, and Woolworths, which has improved its returns. Superdrug has performed less well, and has increased sales, but operating profits are static. The group could carry out a stock buy-back, or make an acquisition, which would involve more risk.

Kingfisher loses its prey

Article Abstract:

Kingfisher had sought to acquire Asda, but has failed to achieve this, and has also lost Geoff Brady, a key manager. Brady was involved in Kingfisher's Big W format, a British alternative to Wal-Mart. Kingfisher was acquiring Asda to add food to its Big W format. Kingfisher sees a general retailer as able to provide the necessary expertise for such a venture, according to chief executve, Geoff Mulcahy. Kingfisher may decide on an alternative food retailer following the failure of the bid for Asda.
