Elf Aquitaine is a French petroleum company which is among the biggest ten petroleum concerns world wide. The company was privatized fully in 1994, and is seeking to reduce its debts and consolidate. The company reported a large loss for 1994 due to imprudent investments. Chemicals earnings have since improved. Earnings from domestic refining have been affected by sales of gasoline at French hypermarkets. Some improvements in refining margins for the industry as a whole have been noted in Dec 1995.
