Link stuck in legal sidelines

Article Abstract:

London and Continental Railways (LCR) is a United Kingdom railroad consortium which is likely to collapse. LCR was awarded a contract to construct the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, and the project will have to be reviewed by the government. If the project is put out to tender with a different contract from that of LCR, the government could face challenges from bidders such as Eurorail, which failed to win the contract. They could seek reimbursement for their costs, and call for a moratorium to be imposed on the project.

Cosy fees cartel starts to crumble

Article Abstract:

The UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is likely to issue a report on underwriting practices for share issues in Nov 1996. Critics argue that a cartel has been established by merchant banks though competition has been introduced elsewhere in financial markets. This cartel may have started to be eroded by the appearance of competitors elsewhere. The OFT may refer the issue to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission if it finds evidence of structural problems that have to be tackled through legislation.

Building contractors: making tracks

Article Abstract:

Western Infrastructure Maintenance had had a 75% stake acquired by Amey, a contracting company, as part of the privatization of British Rail (BR) Three of BR's seven maintenance companies have been privatized, and a consortium including Tarmac has acquired the central region. Other UK contractors are likely to seek to acquire track renewal and maintenance operations as they are privatized. The UK rail network is to be upgraded in the decade from 1996, and the privatizations are attractive.
