Little grey cells

Article Abstract:

A neural network is an artificial intelligence technology that simulates the workings ofthe human brain more closely than any other conventional computer system. It iscomposed of a number of interconnected 'neurons' that are each programmed to carry out a simple piece of processing. The use of neural nets in the commercial sector is becoming more prevalent. One business sector that is reaping the benefits of neural computing is direct marketing. The marketing research firm Recognition Research Ltd, for instance, has developed a program called 'Customer Predictor' which can be used to identify customers and prospects who are more receptive to direct mailing. Neural nets are also proving their value in financial applications. They are now being used in forecasting financial trends and other data analysis/prediction tasks, as well as in 'pattern recognition' tasks such as risk management, credit scoring and fraud detection.

Window on the tax world

Article Abstract:

The tax software market looks set for a period of rapid change brought about by technological innovations. One important factor spurring change is the development of graphical user interfaces such as Microsoft Windows. While Windows has been around for several years, tax applications using it are only now becoming available. One reason for this is because most vendors have opted to create Windows versions of established tax software packages by completely rethinking their products with a view to improving productivity. Examples of such enhanced and reformulated packages are the Windows versions of packages by TaxSoft, Lotus and Digita. Another important development spurring change in the tax software market is the introduction of Electronic Lodgement by the Inland Revenue, a move that has prompted vendors to introduce self-assessment packages for taxpayers and tax preparers alike.
