Feeling flush?

Article Abstract:

Pension funds and investments to repay mortgages have to operate long term, but many investors want to take on more risk and trade rapidly. Spread betting is regulated by the Financial Services Authority in Britain, and allows investors to gamble without paying tax, since the bookmakers pay any tax due. Spread betters can take advantage of opportunities open to options trades since there are quoted spreads for options contracts. Spread betting can also in theory influence stock prices. Losses are possible because spread betting is a high-risk activity.

Passing the baton

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom personal equity plans (Peps) are available until April 5 1999 and managers are seeking to persuade investors to transfer Pep holdings, as well as buy the last Peps that they are entitled to purchase. Investors are consolidating their holdings, and they can carry out transfers after April 5 1999. Transfer charges can be reduced by moving to a different sector with the existing fund manager, rather than moving to a new fund manager. Diversification can be achieved by using one provider and a multi-fund Pep or a fund-of-funds Pep.

Long-term performances with staying power

Article Abstract:

Investors seek consistency when selecting a unit trust, and it is not easy to achieve a consistent performance. There have been 14 Japanese unit trusts which have performed better than average on three consecutive occasions, from a total of some 120 trusts. This criterion for success applies to 23 unit trusts specialising in the US of a total of 136, and 19 unit trusts of a total of 120 specialising in the United Kingdom. The data refer to the years ending in Oct 1997, 1998 and 1999.
