Making the constraints visible: testing the ecological approach to interface design

Article Abstract:

Evaluation of the ecological approach to interface design in an intensive care system identifies anatomical and causal constraints in operators of a hemodynamic monitoring task. The anatomical constraints are seen in an integrated balloon display on three pressure and flows. The pressures and flows are nested within their potential etiology in the etiological potential display. The visible constraints help medical professionals accurately and rapidly diagnose, and treat common clinical problems.

Cognitive task analysis: harmonizing tasks to human capacities

Article Abstract:

The designing of a computer aided interface to provide traffic controllers with rule-based advice during the occurrence of irregularities will help in reducing overload. This will reduce the effort required by them to deal with the irregularities. The cognitive task load (CTL) analysis provides guidelines to redesign the model. It emphasizes the elimination of knowledge-based level of dealing with irregularities. CTL analysis can be used in the future to redesign man-machine systems.

An evolutionary perspective on the growth of cognitive engineering: the Riso genotype

Article Abstract:

Alternative proposals are required for the development of cognitive engineering as a discipline. The Riso genotype, the result of a study conducted at the Riso National Laboratory in Denmark, provides various design principles which can be adopted for cognitive engineering. One is the ecological interface design which is a theory-based framework used for developing interfaces of sophisticated sociotechnical systems.
