Farewell Sir Richard

Article Abstract:

Marks and Spencer chief executive, Richard Greenbury, was also responsible for changes in the way that United Kingdom directors' pay is reported. The company's stock price has dropped since a peak in 1997, but the impact of his decisions is likely to be felt over the longer term. His committee has ensured that more information is given on directors' pay in company reports. Marks and Spencer paid Greenbuty a large annual bonus in 1997 when decisions that he took appear to have led to later problems, and this shows that there are problems in using annual bonuses to reward directors.
